Modest Mouse - Workin' on Leavin' the Livin' Tabbed by James Griffith yieldandscream@aol.com This is the correct way to play Workin' on Leavin' the Livin'. The posted version only had the chords right. Intro: Part 1a Strum these two chords: (heavy reverb) G major (6) C major 7 e -(0)- -0- b -0- -0- g -0- -0- d -0- -2- a -2- -3- e -3- -0- Over these two chords, play this: Figure: Part 1b (whole notes, more or less) (with Ebow) E-----10(hold)*----/12(hold)*--\10(hold)-------/12(hold) B------------------------------------------------------------------ *hold these notes for slightly longer than a measure, sliding back and forth, and bend the notes about a quarter tone. (if you listen you'll hear what I mean). Also, use an E-bow and use some sort of watery, tremulous flanger/chorus pedal and lots of reverb. Verse(sort of): Figure 2a* e-------------------------------------------------0--0 b-------------------------------------------------0--0 g-------------0-4-------0-4------0------4------0--0 d--------0h5------0h5------0h5--oh5---0---0--2 a-------------------------------------------------2--3 e-------------------------------------------------3--0 *these aren't exactly hammer-ons, but more like quick slides up from the open D note to the 5th fret G note. regardless, hammer-ons will suffice. Final Riff (repeated ad nauseum, over the chords) e-------------------------- b---3h5-5-5-5h3------- g--------------------4---- d-------------------------- a------------------------- e-------------------------- This riff is played with a digital delay, probably a Boss DD-3 or a Boss RV-3, I've spotted Isaac using both live. if not these than it's delay added while mixing. The delay cause the tonality of this riff to be confusing and sound like he's playing more than he is, but, it's just those 3 notes. That's all. Fairly simple, just three or four riffs. The reverb and delays are what make this song. **************************************************** Tabbed by Austin Smith cool_guy546@hotmail.com Help and Contributions are always nice and more than welcome. Enjoy! On the intro it sound almost as if theres a echo effect, but I just strum the first then second chord and strum the second 1 extra times hitting it softly. E ----3-----0--------- on the 11th time skip ----------------------------------3----0-- A ----2-----3--------- the first part and go ----------------------------------2----3-- D ----0-----2--------- into this part --3/5--9--3/5--9--3/5-3/5--9----0----2-- G ----0-----0--------- x10 ----------------------------------0----0-- x6 B ----0-----0--------- ----------------------------------0----0-- E ----0-----0--------- ----------------------------------0----0-- ^____hit this softer for about two more times Then start hitting this again like in the beginning, then start the hammer part, but its played by opposites....strum once alone, then once with the hammer on. E ----3----0---------------------------------------------------- A ----2----3---------------------------------------------------- D ----0----2---------------------------------------------------- G ----0----0------8h9h8h9h8h9h--7h8h7h8h7h8h-------------- repeat forever B ----0----0---------------------------------------------------- E ----0----0--------------------------------------------------- not as hard as it looks, just hit the 8, then hammer on the 9, hitting the 8, 3 times....same with 7 to 8 Then the ending outro is E ------------------------------------ A ----------------------------------- D ----3--5------7---------5--3------ G -----------7------7--5------------ B ----------------------------------- E -----------------------------------
