the founding fathers
ARTHUR
arthur's an alright guy.
of course, arthur's also the one writing this.
arthur's primary role in blasting trout overbite was drummer, although he sang
a number
of songs and contributed many lyrics. he also stunned people with his ever-changing
facial hair
and constantly felt overshadowed by his roommate matt, who was better at everything.
well, not really.
arthur entered
the band with no real musical experience apart from piano lessons when
he was very young and a stint as a percussionist in his elementary school's
band.
for the first two years of blasting trout overbite, arthur had no drums, and
instead banged on
cookie tins and popcorn bowls with a variety of implements, including scissors.
eventually he acquired a tambourine, and then in 2003 a snare drum, and then
finally
an actual barebones drum set. by the time blasting trout overbite recorded "yes,"
he was
just barely becoming good at playing them.
finally
in 2005 arthur has ventured into the stormy waters of guitar playing and songwriting.
who knows what the future holds in store for him?
DAN
an excellent guitarist and
songwriter, dan brought a lot to the band, including his experience
in a similarly ridiculous (but more folksy) band called snot
patties. as such dan was
responsible for many of blasting trout overbite's quirkiest ideas.
interesting
facts about dan:
he is the oldest member of the band.
he is left-handed.
he is largely responsible for blasting trout overbite's collection of toy instruments,
including the hot keys, the cool keys, and the kool shades.
he has an intense interest in the many fruits of the world.
he is quite adept at the four-track.
he knew about awesome bands such as neutral milk hotel and the mountain goats
long
before most of the other members of the band did.
he constantly switches hair styles from clean-cut to scruffy and then back again!
in addition
to playing guitar and singing, dan also played such things as bass and organ
for the band.
yay dan!
MATT
matt was the most hardcore
member of blasting trout overbite, having spent time in several
metal and hardcore bands (including some while he was also in our band!). his
talents include
playing electric bass and guitar (not to mention the kool shades), drumming,
writing very funny
lyrics (see "that's a chronic ailment" from the fewn
album), singing, and making girls swoon.
without
matt, pBOTe would never have
existed. his gift for discovering limitless catchy riffs
was what made that band awesome. matt also brought a sense of theatricality
and epicness
to the band (although on some occasions this became way too much), and he motivated
us
to pursue a bigger audience. the fact that he was active in the penn state amateur
theater
group helped us achieve that goal. our song "my
invisible head brain" became legendary
among that group of people.
PLASKET
plasket was truly what made
blasting trout overbite unique. an unparalleled singer and songwriter
(and rather good drummer), plasket set our hearts ablaze with his amazing talent.
a frontman on
par with frank black and dave thomas (of pere ubu), plasket could come up with
a complete song
(with specific chords and a whole verse-chorus structure) in the span of a short
walk around
campus. on top of that, his gift for crafting absurd lyrics was, in short, amazing.
to wit:
i saw a
bat and it bit me / now I can't ske what I wrote.
i can't ske if i wrote "see" or some varientithereof
or if i worte "varient
thereof" and "wrote" instead of "worte."
(from "knappy birthday," off of the double
it in half album)
we always
considered plasket to be our lead singer, despite the fact that due to a number
of
factors (arguments, living far away from each other, busy schedules, poor communication),
plasket could not always record and/or perform live with us. but everyone can
agree that when
plasket was able to take the stage with us everyone had a great time and musical
history was
made.
towards
the end of blasting trout overbite's all too short career, plasket began taking
up guitar
and also experimenting on the four-track. both of these have produced excellent
results.
the second generation
JESS
jess joined the band towards
the end of our first year already having much experience on the
guitar and as a singer (with an excellent voice, as well!). unfortunately she
only appeared on a
handful of blasting trout overbite recordings and played with us live twice
- once as our opener
and once as our bassist.
despite
that she was an excellent fan of the band and one of our most vocal supporters.
she
penned the excellent lyrics to the half-forgotten song "it
could always be worse" and inspired one
of our best birthday albums.
PAUL
perhaps the best musician
in the band, we met paul sometime between our first and second
years. he had a flair for bringing a little much-needed soul and groove to the
band, as evidenced
by the saucy "lonesome tale of fat dolphin," which he sang.
paul is an
award-winning guitarist, but stupidly he was often relegated to playing bass.
this led
to much tension and misery, but despite it all he remained our friend and sometime
bandmate.
paul continues
to remain musically active and also DJs many parties and shows, and damn
excellently at that.
the third generation
APRIL
schooled in the ways of
the guitar by dan, april quickly became a powerful force in the blasting
trout overbite arsenal. the fact that she has a beautiful voice certainly didn't
hurt.
april began
her career in the band by penning some lyrics for the dirty
frogs album, but quickly
graduated to singing and playing guitar for us (on yes,
among other things).
FOODBAG
foodbag (full name j. foodbag
foodbagsson) was not only given a purpose in life by the members
of blasting trout overbite, but he was even given his name by us. once we learned
that he could
play trombone, though, his life was never the same.
we had big
plans for collaborations with foodbag, but his appearances in our recordings
are few
and far between. however he played several live shows with us, including our
history-defying
performance of "tequila."
