Provisionally, I agree with everything that .270 Mike says except that
last line.  If you're hunting, you want to stalk into range where you
are confident that you can drop your quarry in one shot.   For most
hunters, who don't train like military snipers (and I certainly
don't!) that range is 200-300 yards on most game.  Jeff Cooper once
opined that if the ordinary hunter finds himself in a situation where
he needs to take a shot from beyond 300 yards, he was doing something
wrong.  You owe a quick clean death to your quarry; that's part of
being a sportsman.  In addition, such a death will insure that the
meat you take is of higher quality than if the animal pumped itself up
on stress hormone and adrenaline and ran for _any_ distance.
