Re: [pen] Best AV for business

The one for U of M - whoever makes it, I forget his name, but I always hated it. It's pretty much your standard McAfee AV v8.5 Enterprise msi that's been wrapped with probably the most ridiculous amount of batch scripts that I've ever seen! It consists of bat files that are hidden by modified a cmd, along with a few compiled shell apps (grep, cat, curl), and rtf files that pop up in wordpad when you least expect it. The least he could of done is just print the notes off that are on the rtfs on the same installer dialog or something. The reason I still have it is because I worked there for a good amount of years repairing student and faculty laptops. The AV client does a reasonable job at what its supposed to do, though I usually suggest people to use something that doesn't depend on third party software in order to be usable.

Anyway, I removed the time check from the install script and threw it into a nice NSIS exec. Unfortunately I can't "redownload" it from the site for lack of permission (though I do still have access to my server space and mail on there, so I must of been removed from some group that is allowed to download it.) The full scan engine updates and definition updates work just fine at updating from the U of M McAfee server. Oh well. I'm glad I keep a copy of it so I won't lose it.

At work we use symantic enterprise and it's pretty workable but we're behind in versions so I'll have to see when we upgrade.... At home I use the free one I can downloa from U of M Ann Arbor.....It's a hybrid of McAfee I believe was engineered by their CS department.... It's free and seems to work pretty well but one must have a student ID to download..... --Steve

This is why I specified Enterprise AVD Suite. Any other McAfee AV version sucks. McAfee Online gets a particularly angry middle finger from me.

I second McAfee. It has kept 12 machines virus free for the past 4

essential work on them. Myspace? haha! don't think so sucka! 5 minutes
later the page loads. Any virus that it doesn't catch would probably
just raise the white flag and surrender from the pain of getting
swapped out so often. Think of the children!!!

Oh, you mean you want the machine to still be usable? I recommend
    AmigaOS.
