RE: [pen] Guns

Definitely after a reliable semi-auto. I've heard good/bad about Glocks - some people swear by them, others have bad experiences with them blowing up.

I'm taking the 5 hour class this saturday morning and spending some time with some rentals. I definitely want to take it slow and educate myself because I have had nearly -0- exposure to guns. I definitely will need to a good safe to store it in(along with other assorted hard drives, papers, etc.), so any suggestions on that would be helpful as well. (biometric lock would be nice!)

Mike, any ranges you like to frequent or can suggest? I'm in rochester hills.(21 and 59 area) (If anyone ever wants to meet up out this way for tech talk/BSing just give me a shout)

Nuff said.

niteshad asked the right questions, but there are a few others to ask:

1. What preference (if any) to semi-auto or revolver?

2. Intended use/living space (already asked)

3. You intend to carry concealed since you have (soon) a CPL, so there
are a million other things to consider: your size, carry preference, etc.

4. [not a question] Go big or go home. Don't carry or intend to stop a
zombie with a .25, .32, etc. .45 is expensive, but it "fucking works"
There are other calibers that are effective as well.

On to the schooling:

*************
NUMBER ONE!!!
*************
(sorry for the all caps, but it is required)

NEVER! AND I MEAN NEVER!!!!!!! EVER! Never touch the trigger until you
are committed to firing! Don't fuck around here!

NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER!!!!! Never "play around" and point
**ANY** firearm at anything you are not intending to shoot! Miss me at
the front door? Better be sure what is behind it! No cat/dog for
trigger practice, etc.

DO NOT FUCK AROUND! Firearms (just like cars) are extremely deadly
tools. When you lose respect for it for a billionth of a nanosecond, it
will fire and it will do what it does.

I have (more than once) fired a pistol in my house accidentally. I had
enough sense to point the right way while being a dumbass and touching
the trigger on a loaded gun.

Remember those 2 rules and DO NOT break them both at the same time and
all will be well.

Moving on...Oh, and refer to number 6 below about 58 times :-)

1. I have over a dozen pistols and would love to bring them all to give
you the feel for a 9mm, .45, 10mm, .40, .357 Magnum, .22LR, etc.
mike@datavibe or 313-445-9510 will get me on the calendar.

2. Revolvers are less capacity, but if you have a strict budget (and a
little sense) you will buy one. Point and pull. Click (misfire). Pull
again. Dead zombie. Try that with a semi-auto :-D

3. I carry a .357 Magnum S&W revolver and a .45ACP Sig Sauer (or .45ACP
Springfield XD). That is minimum. Oh, and reloads/magazines for the
above. Like I said above, a .25, etc will piss someone off. a .45/.357
will crush your ribs WITH Kevlar on. Without it, the target *will* stop.

4. 12 Gauge for home defense. Rack it and no need to shoot. Like a
green light; everyone knows what it is. Use 00 or 000 buck shot in a
house alone or some sort of bird shot in a condo/kids/etc.

5. CARRY ONLY HOLLOWPOINT AMMUNITION!! It isn't to kill better. No.
It is to stop in the zombie when you must shoot and grandma is behind.
FMJ will usually move out. JHP will usually stop...or it is supposed to.

6. Read the shit above number one and then repeat this step a few times.
  You will thank me later.

7. If you consume anything that can ever so slightly mess with your head
(cold meds, booze, LSD, etc), lock the gun up. There will be no need
for it. I've made the mistake.

FINALLY:

8. Let me know if you have *any* questions or want any help at all. I
consider myself an average shooter (I hit the target/zombie) and grew up
around all of it, so I have tons of free information to give. Call or
email if you want to know something or go tear up some targets. Oh, and
let me give you (or anyone who already has 50) holster advice. Don't
waste money like everyone else does trying to find a good one.

Also, where do you live? I am upper east side (21 & Jefferson/I-94).
Meeting up would kick ass...if you're not forever away.

Read the all caps section once more for good measure. Trust me, it is
worth it.

***
Hope I helped some.

.270
(also, 9mm, 10mm, 5.7mm, .40, .45, .22LR, .357/.38, .223/5.56mm, .308,
7.62x54R, 12 Ga, and I prolly forgot something....oh and about 20,000
rounds for the zombies :D )
