I specifically recommend against Symantec Endpoint Protection (that's the v11 client suite) - it's excellent, but only if you're running it on new, fast PCs. Otherwise it's a bloated resource hog.
AVG is okay, but both the licensing implementation and cosmetics have always annoyed me.

"Maintenance", which can be purchased, allows "free" access to new versions... But each version "lives" for several years.
